Overview

Mayor Brian Henry was elected Mayor of the Town of Pawleys Island in November 2019 and is currently serving his fourth term following reelection in November 2025. His tenure has been marked by significant accomplishments and initiatives aimed at preserving the unique character of Pawleys Island.

Accomplishments

Under Mayor Henry’s leadership, several key initiatives have been successfully implemented, including:

  • Strategic Planning: Development of a formal strategic plan outlining future priorities for Pawleys Island:  Beach Preservation, Island Resiliency, Creek Management, Long Term Capital Funding
  • Architectural Preservation: Establishment of an Architectural Review Board to safeguard local heritage.
  • Environmental Conservation: Implementation of a Tree Ordinance to conserve the island’s natural beauty.
  • Coastal Resilience:
    • Creation of a Sea Level Rise Coastal Adaptation Study in 2022 and adoption of a comprehensive Master Drainage Plan in 2026 to address vital coastal resilience issues.  And over the last 3 years, the Town has secured $4 million to fund these projects.

            2026 Focus & Priorities:
  • Flood Mitigation and Drainage: The Town formally adopted a Master Drainage Study in January 2026.  This study provides customized and detailed recommendations for each section of the island to address flooding.  The Town has secured $4 million to apply to these projects and will continue to proactively seek funds at all levels of government.  We will prioritize projects on the island so we can apply this funding and start making headway.
  • Historic Preservation: The Town contracted with a consultant in 2025 and completed a full day workshop to begin the process of initiating a local Historic Preservation program.  Our focus over the next few years will be to:
    • Complete of a Historic Resources Survey Inventory Report
    • Adopt a Historic Preservation Ordinance
    • Adopt Historic Preservation Design Guidelines
    • Formalize property owner incentives
    • Create Historic Preservation Board
    •
  • Beach Restoration: The Town sustained substantive beach erosion following Hurricane Ian in 2022.  The United States Army Corps, SC Emergency Management, and FEMA have allocated funds to help us conduct an emergency repair beach renourishment.  The Town will work diligently to clear any remaining hurdles to get this project underway as soon as possible.
